What to Know and Do Before You Get Tattooed

BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

  1. Eat a Full Meal
    A proper meal helps stabilize blood sugar levels and prevent lightheadedness or nausea during your session.

  2. Hydrate Thoroughly
    Drink water throughout the day before your appointment. Proper hydration supports better skin condition and helps your body manage the stress of tattooing.

  3. Avoid Blood Thinners and Stimulants (at least 24 hours prior)
    Do not consume:

    • Alcohol

    • Aspirin or ibuprofen

    • Caffeine

    These substances can thin your blood, increase bleeding, and heighten sensitivity or anxiety.
    Note: Tattoo artists cannot legally tattoo intoxicated clients.

  4. Wear Loose, Comfortable Clothing
    Choose clothing that allows easy access to the tattoo area and helps you stay relaxed. Avoid anything tight or restrictive.

  5. Get a Good Night’s Sleep
    Being well-rested helps your body handle the physical stress of a tattoo session more effectively.

FOR LONGER SESSIONS

  1. Bring a Snack
    Choose easy-to-digest, energy-boosting snacks like:

    • Granola bars

    • Fruit

    • Nuts or trail mix

    Keeping your blood sugar steady helps prevent fatigue or dizziness during extended sessions.

  2. Pack a Sports Drink or Juice
    Drinks with electrolytes (e.g., Gatorade, coconut water) support hydration and energy more effectively than water alone in long sessions.

  3. Take Breaks if Needed
    Don’t hesitate to ask for a short break if you start feeling overwhelmed or fatigued. Communication is key.

REMINDERS

  • Avoid tanning, sunburns, or exfoliating the area beforehand. Healthy, intact skin tattoos best.

  • Shower before your appointment, and arrive clean and free of lotions, oils, or fragrance.

  • Bring ID—most studios require proof of age.

  • If you're sick or feel unwell, reschedule. Your body needs to be in good shape for healing.
